Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
