Typhoon Matmo Slammed Coastal China Causing Massive Evacuations
Typhoon Matmo struck the coast on the southern shores of China on the weekend, shortly after sweeping across the island province of Hainan. The intense weather led to the evacuation of around 350,000 residents, bringing torrential rain and damaging winds, particularly between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Hainan's Wenchang. Ferry services were suspended and flights cancelled at the airport in Haikou.
Typhoon Statistics
Matmo, the 21st typhoon of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 94mph and dumped over 50mm of precipitation in six hours in Chongzou and Qinzhou. The city of the region also experienced high rainfall totals.
The storm prompted China's highest-level red alert, with disturbances in Zhanjiang, where commercial activities, transport links and highways were shut. In Hong Kong, 100 flights were affected and 30 cancelled.
Forecast and Movement
As the typhoon advances inward towards Cao Bang province in the neighboring country, it is projected to weaken into a tropical depression with 55mph winds but will continue to bring substantial precipitation. Vietnam's northern regions could experience significant rainfall on the following day, raising the risk of inundation and mudslides. The weather pattern is expected to move towards Yunnan region in China, where additional heavy rainfall is probable.

At the same time, a hurricane named Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on Saturday night, first as a tropical storm. It led to a storm watch for south-western regions from a coastal point to another location on Monday.
In the morning of the next day, Priscilla was about 491 kilometers from Cabo Corrientes with sustained winds of 105km/h. It intensified into a hurricane in the night, when sustained winds reached at 75mph.
Though not expected to make landfall, the storm is expected to generate hazardous swells and strong currents as it moves northwestward along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is forecast on the coming day, amounting to 100-150mm in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Other regions could receive 50-100mm.
In other parts, Cyclone Shakhti has formed as the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm of the year in the a body of water, causing an warning from the India Meteorological Department for Maharashtra. On Sunday, Shakhti was 130 miles southeast of Ras al Hadd, Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph.
Shakhti, which has tracked in a southwestern direction and weakened, is predicted to recurve eastward into the the sea. Rough seas are likely to persist along the coastal stretch and heavy rainfall is expected in coastal districts including specific Indian cities.
