JP Morgan Demands Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Corporate HQ Access

The financial institution has told employees working at its recently built corporate base in New York that they are required to provide their physical characteristics to enter the multibillion-dollar structure.

Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory

The financial firm had originally planned for the collection of biometric data at its new skyscraper to be discretionary.

Yet, workers of the US's largest bank who have started operations at the new headquarters since August have been sent electronic messages stating that biometric entry was now "mandatory".

The Technology Behind Entry

Biometric access demands personnel to submit their fingerprints to pass through entry points in the lobby rather than using their access passes.

Office Complex Information

The bank's headquarters, which reportedly required an investment of $3bn to construct, will in time function as a base for 10,000 workers once it is completely filled later this year.

Protection Reasoning

JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is believed that the implementation of biological markers for entry is designed to make the building better protected.

Exemption Provisions

There are exceptions for specific personnel who will retain the ability to use a traditional pass for entry, although the standards for who will utilize more conventional entry methods remains undefined.

Complementary Digital Tools

In addition to the introduction of biometric readers, the bank has also introduced the "Corporate Access" digital platform, which functions as a electronic pass and portal for staff resources.

The app allows staff to manage visitor access, navigate interior guides of the facility and schedule meals from the facility's multiple food service providers.

Broader Safety Concerns

The deployment of enhanced security measures comes as business organizations, notably those with major presence in NYC, look to increase security following the attack of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in July.

Brian Thompson, the leader of the healthcare company, was killed in the incident not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is unclear if JP Morgan intends to implement the biometric system for personnel at its locations in other important economic centers, such as London.

Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends

The decision comes amid controversy over the implementation of technology to track workers by their employers, including monitoring physical presence metrics.

Previously, all staff members on flexible arrangements were directed they are required to come back to the office full-time.

Executive Perspective

The organization's head, the financial executive, has characterized JP Morgan's new skyscraper as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the institution.

The banker, one of the influential banking figures, lately warned that the likelihood of the American markets crashing was far greater than many investors thought.
